Here are some
helpful little Tips & Tricks
to make your visit to Disneyland more enjoyable. They've been
complied by Disney Guy
and a handful of his Disneyland-wise pals. The Tips
& Tricks are arranged in no particular order,
and remember, they're not hard and fast rules. Sometimes the
Tips & Tricks
work better than at other times. But, you can try them and find
out for yourself! You may even discover a few of your own. If
you do, why not share them?
Send us your insider tips!
- Write
down where you parked your car, and don't lose the paper
it's written on.
- Many
attractions have split lines. In general, the left side
tends to move faster than the right side.
- Many
of the "thrill" rides feel faster at night. Space Mountain
is a great example.
- The
Matterhorn has two lines: one wraps around the Tomorrowland
side of the mountain, the other wraps around the Fantasyland
side. In general, the Tomorrowland side track feels like
a longer ride, while the Fantasyland track feels faster.
- The
Fantasyland side of the Matterhorn line gives you two views
of the Abominable Snowman, but only one on the Tomorrowland
side.
- The
Monorail operator sometimes allows a small number of visitors
to ride with him/her in the front Monorail cabin. Ask the
operator as soon as you begin to board. It is a great ride,
with windows all around.
- Sometimes
the Mark Twain operator will allow visitors into the wheelhouse
and "steer" the Mark Twain. You might even get an official
certificate! And it's a great view of the park from way
up on top.
- If
you dine at the Blue Bayou Restaurant in New Orleans Square,
ask for a table by the water. You may have to wait a bit
longer, but the view is worth it.
- If
you want to eat at the Blue Bayou, go there directly when
the park opens to get a reservation.
- Dress
in layers and bring a sweater. Even summer evenings in Southern
California can be a bit chilly. You can always rent a locker
on Main St. and leave the extra clothes there until you
need them.
- An
hour and a half before closing, New Orleans Square seems
to have short lines.
- Most
people eat dinner between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, so it's a
great time to get on the most popular attractionsthe
lines are shorter.
- For
a great view of the fireworks displays, stand near the front
of the Magic Castle, near the large compass/legend. Trees
may block your view if you stand by the Partner's statue.
- Pay
attention to start times for the parades, even if you don't
want to see them. Many people line up 30 minutes (or more)
before a parade, so that can be a good time for a bite to
eat in areas away from parade route. Also, many ride lines
are shorter.
- The
best time to go shopping in the summer is during the warm
afternoon hours. You can cool off inside the air-conditioned
stores and browse or shop.
- ...and
speaking of shopping, any purchases can be sent via Package
Express, so you don't have to carry parcels with you all
day. The cashier can hold your purchase, and reclaim your
purchase at the Main Gate Newsstand (just west of the Main
Gates), on your way out of the park. This service is free.
The packages are available for pick up 2 hours after you
purchase them.
- ...and
speaking of Package Express, if you stay at one of the Disney
hotels (either the Disneyland Hotel or Disney Pacific) your
packages can be delivered directly to your room.
- Tom
Sawyer Island is least crowded in the early morning and
late afternoon. The Island closes at dusk, so give yourself
time to explore, if you go later in the day.
- Use
the back entrance to the Disney Gallery for fun. It is a
stairway in the back corner of New Orleans Square (on Royal
Street.)
- The
Disneyland Railroad begins running about 15 minutes before
the park opens. You can ride around the park nonstop, before
the park is opened to the public.

- If
you visit Disneyland on your birthday, go to City Hall,
(first building on your left as you enter Main Street from
the Main Gate) and you'll get a sticker, and sometimes,
special treatment, such as front-of-line status.
- Always
check the board! It's located just southwest of the Magic
Castle, at the corner of Main Street. The board lists info
on ride closures due to mechanical problems, plus other
useful info about the park on the day you visit.
- Ride
the train! The Disneyland Railroad can be your best friend
on crowded days...many visitors forget that the train encircles
the entire park, and the wait to board is seldom very long.
Relax while you ride from from one end of the park to the
other, and give your feet a rest.
- Use
the Single Passenger line for Rocket Rod's. A Single Rider
pass allows you to skip the regular line (often hours long)
and board with little or no wait.
- The
waiting lines for Tomorrowland attractions generally abate
in the late afternoon.
- In
general, lunchtime is a good time to ride the Fanstasy Land
attractions.
- Try
the Jungle Cruise at the end of the day; the lines are often
shorter than earlier in the day.
- You
can pay to eat a dessert buffet in the Disney Gallery Patio
overlooking The Rivers of America for each Fantasmic! show.
Tickets currently cost about $39 per person and can be purchased
at a special window at the Main Entrance before the park
opens. On busy days, the line forms before the regular Disneyland
ticket lines open; however, if it isn't too busy and you
didn't buy tickets at the Main Gate, check later at the
Disney Gallery. This is a great idea for viewing Fantasmic!,
enjoying a great dessert, and not having to battle the huge
crowds saving a spot hours in advance of the showtime.
-
The Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square is recommended for lunch
or dinner. The clam chowder in a Mickey-shaped bread bowl is wonderful
(and a really good deal too!) In the drinks department, you have
to order a mint julep. It's terrific.
- Another
good dinner spot is Red Rockets Pizza Port. It's seldom
crowded, so there are plenty of seats, and the food is good.
- The
shop near The Pirates of the Caribbean often offers free
praline candy samples near the cash register, and if you
ask nicely, sometimes they'll open a box for you.
